Question: Should only one person train the dog?
Answer: When a person is teaching a new behavior, it is easier for the dog to learn if only one person teaches that particular behavior. Once the dog understands this new behavior, then everyone else in the family should be taught how to give the appropriate signal to elicit this behavior. Dogs respond differently to the person they are with. They are also more likely to respond best to the one who works with them the most. I like everyone in the family to train the dog, including the children. It is important that parents include the kids in the training of the dog. I will teach games for the children to play with the dog that are appropriate, fun, and useful and will not cause MORE problems! How long will it take me to train my dog? Training is a lifelong endeavor, just as it is with parenting a child. Once you teach something new to your dog, you have to continually reinforce the behavior or else it will begin to fade. You just can’t allow some behaviors, such as come when called, to fade!! This is why I teach people to reinforce behaviors they want the dog to perform correctly to for its entire life.
