Question: Can I just send my dog away to be trained?
Answer: You could, but I try to discourage people from sending their dog away to be trained. First of all, you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. Many trainers are not as ethical as we’d like to believe they are. Also, it is the relationship between YOU and your dog that needs help. The dog needs to learn how to respond to YOU - there is no worth to you if the dog only responds to his trainer. Training the dog is not like programming a computer (it might be easier if this were possible!) - the training will break down if not kept up. I have made a few exceptions to this rule; it has seemed to work best when the person has continued to train their dog through me for a period of time afterwards. I will not take on a dog without the prior commitment from the owner to continue the dog’s training.
